Introducing Mark Hughes

As you are aware, the 13th and 16th greens are currently under construction. Cutten's Golf Course & Grounds staff are completing this work, in particular Mark Hughes. Mark is an integral member of the project construction team for the Master Plan at Cutten Fields. He began his career in golf at Lionhead Golf & Country Club during its construction at the age of 15. Mark continued working there as much as possible after its opening while he was going to school. Mark graduated from the University of Guelph with an Associate Diploma in Agriculture in 1997. After completing school, he joined a golf construction company and spent more than 20 years working all over Canada and the US. He built a reputation for executing projects on time and on budget. Mark had the pleasure of working with many great golf architects including Jeff Mingay, Doug Carrick and Robert Trent Jones Jr. In 2017 he made the decision to give up the travelling life style. Choosing to work locally at Cutten Fields has afforded Mark the opportunity to take a more active role in his family life, which includes his wife and 3 children. Mark has managed many projects in the past, but he is particularly proud of his work on the reconstructed 15th hole at Cutten Fields. He was part of the team that directed the build, grow and opening of the new hole in 2019. Traditionally, he has worked for a

contractor but going forward he will be part of the planning, coordinating and execution side. He is excited and confident about this new project.

Construction Update

  • Work is continuing into the late fall

  • If the weather cooperates, much of the heavy earth moving and shaping on holes 13 and 16 should be finished. If there isn’t significant snowfall, some drainage and irrigation will be installed as well

  • An amendment to the Tree Management plan was submitted and approved by the City of Guelph

  • The planting and relocating of some sizeable trees continued this fall and this will continue weather permitting

  • 6 trees were planted on the right-hand side of the 15th hole

  • 2 trees were planted on the left-hand side of the 16th hole

  • A draft construction schedule has been developed and the sequence of projects was created to keep the golf course as open and accessible as possible throughout

  • Jeff Mingay and his team have created a detailed set of drawings that will be submitted to tender
